Protecting the climate through diet?

In purely mathematical terms, we produce enough food for everyone worldwide. However, this happens by massively exceeding the planetary load limits and that has consequences. In principle, we could supply the estimated ten billion people on earth in the future with healthy food and at the same time preserve our livelihoods. To achieve this, the agricultural and food system must change massively.

That sounds like a dimension that leaves the individual seemingly helpless. But consumers can also help protect the climate through their consumer behavior and their commitment. Food plays an important role in this: In Germany, alongside mobility and construction, nutrition is responsible for many greenhouse gas emissions that are harmful to the climate.

We can do a lot to protect the climate by taking many small steps – from purchasing to preparing and storing food to using it. The Federal Center for Nutrition's technically and graphically revised medium “My Food – Our Climate” explains how climate and food are connected and which foods are particularly climate-relevant. Our tips show how each individual can improve their personal carbon footprint when eating. But you can make improvements in your environment not only by consuming less meat and choosing products consciously, but also through your own commitment. A magazine on a topic that concerns us all.
