Federal Ministry of Agriculture supports livestock farmers

The Federal Minister of Food and Agriculture, Julia Klöckner, wants to help cattle farmers who have run out of feed for their animals. As in the past year, the Ministry therefore issued an ordinance that enables farmers to use priority ecological areas for the cultivation of so-called catch crop mixtures for fodder purposes.

The cabinet today took note of the ordinance amending the Direct Payments Implementing Ordinance and the Agricultural Payments Obligations Ordinance. It now requires the approval of the Bundesrat.

Julia Klöckner: "Animals need food, all year round. I therefore want to help our farmers pragmatically, making it easier for them to look after their animals. Because in certain regions there has not been enough precipitation so far, too little has grown. In addition, the drought of the past year is having an effect year later. The fodder stocks are still not replenished. Therefore, I clear the way to use the growth of catch crops, which have been registered as ecological priority areas, as fodder. The prerequisite is that the area in which the corresponding area is actually suffering from a lack of food due to the weather and is reported accordingly by the federal states."
