Experts discuss alternatives to piglet castration without anesthesia

Only a good year left until the final end: The painful castration of male piglets without anesthetic should be history after 2020. Several alternative methods have now been approved. But there is still disagreement and uncertainty about which method is the best alternative and what the market will look like afterwards. Renowned experts from science, animal welfare, agriculture and the meat industry will discuss the latest developments on November 21, 2019 at the University of Hohenheim in Stuttgart. The press is cordially invited to the panel discussion as part of the animal science seminar.

The title of the event at the University of Hohenheim is “Abandonment of piglet castration without anesthetic: status and prospects”. Experts discuss the developments that have taken place in the industry over the past year. They show which solutions are available to farmers, processors and consumers and which obstacles exist on the market to implement them.

"The topic has made progress since last year: Slaughterhouses and trade are also slowly opening up to the boar vaccination with Improvac, the immune castration, that we are promoting," explains Prof. Dr. Volker Stefanski, Head of the Department of Behavioral Physiology of Livestock at the University of Hohenheim. Farmers have recently been permitted to use general anesthesia with isoflurane when castrating piglets. But not only scientists but also practitioners have serious reservations about this method: "Anesthesia is still not guaranteed XNUMX percent, piglet mortality is increased and the users are also exposed to the anesthetic gas," says Prof. dr Stefanski.

After short introductory statements and the panel discussion, there is an opportunity for discussions with the speakers.
