Animal health industry positions itself in the Green Deal

The European Green Deal is an ambitious undertaking. It describes a climate-neutral growth strategy that will require enormous efforts from all economic sectors. The sustainability pact is more integral Part of the EU Commission's strategy for implementing the 2030 Agenda of the United Nations and the goals for a Sustainable development. The necessary measures are interlinked, and possible conflicts between economic, ecological and social goals must be resolved.

The Commission estimates that reaching the climate and energy targets by 2030 will require additional investments of €260 billion per year. A quarter of the spending in all EU programs should contribute to the achievement of the climate goals.

From the farm to the table
Important for the agricultural sector are the biodiversity and "From Farm to Fork"-Strategy. It aims to create a sustainable food system. The parameters are fair, healthy and environmentally friendly. According to the Commission, this means, among other things, increasing the nutrient efficiency of fertilization and minimizing the use of plant protection products. But the Commission also focuses on emissions from animal husbandry and animal welfare. The use of antibiotics should be reduced again by half.

With animal health as the cornerstone of animal husbandry and food safety, the animal health sector is particularly well placed to drive future EU strategy. This presupposes that the measures are discussed and defined on a scientific and risk-based basis.

Incentives must also be created to be able to use innovative methods on a larger scale. A wide range of solutions, from modern diagnostics to vaccines and antiparasitics, are available to keep animals healthy. Particular attention is paid to climate change, which can cause previously unknown pathogens to spread in the EU.

Take positive effects into account
The aim of "From Farm to Fork" must be not only to keep an eye on any stresses caused by animal husbandry, but also to take their positive effects into account. Healthy animals enable resource-conserving production of animal-based foods.
