Avian influenza: more than 16 turkeys are culled

At the beginning of November, some cases of avian influenza were detected in the Hamburg area. Poultry farmers were asked to take precautions and monitor their stocks and isolate them from the outside world as much as possible. The virus has now broken out in a poultry farmer on the island of Rügen - around 16.000 animals are being killed, as reported by the Vorpommern-Rügen district on Monday. A radius of 3 km was set up as a restricted area, and access to the affected area was completely blocked off. Since the beginning of November, avian influenza has been detected in more than 20 wild birds on the island of Rügen, with avian influenza pathogens of the subtypes H5N5, H5N8 and H5N1 being detected.
