Future agenda for poultry meat production

The German poultry industry is presenting a plan for the future as to how Germany as a location can be further developed and strengthened through an even more sustainable and animal welfare-oriented poultry production. In the position paper published on Friday, the industry acknowledges its responsibility and proposes an ambitious agenda for further changes and improvements. At the same time, she expects politicians to actually implement key proposals.

"In the election year 2021, important groundwork will be set. The German poultry industry's claim is to help shape the future of meat production in Germany. We are deeply convinced that there is no better location because we have ideal structures in this country and rely on highly competent and committed poultry farmers ", says Friedrich-Otto Ripke, the President of the Central Association of the German Poultry Industry eV (ZDG).

In the position paper, the industry develops numerous measures and concepts in the areas of poultry farming, animal welfare, the environment and regional origin. But keepers and marketers can only take steps forward economically if poultry meat "Made in Germany" is recognizable everywhere as a seal of quality. For example, a label of origin is absolutely necessary in gastronomy so that people in Germany can consciously choose poultry of German origin.

Only if people in Germany's high demand for poultry meat is met by domestic production can the industry help shape animal welfare and environmental standards from this strong position. If German policy goes too far with the requirements, the competition outside of Germany benefits, which produces poultry meat under significantly less ambitious standards.
