Even more animal welfare: sausages from straw pigs

Kaufland is now offering sausages made from straw pigs at selected service counters in North Rhine-Westphalia. The animals come from regional suppliers in a level 3 outdoor climate. They are kept on straw and thus grow up particularly gently and appropriately. With the new sausage products, the company is making it even easier for its customers to opt for more animal welfare. Customers can choose from a total of 20 different sausage products made from straw pork. These include meat sausage, liver sausage, black pudding, Mettwurst or ham.

“In order to sustainably improve animal welfare in livestock husbandry, we want to make the changeover as easy as possible for our customers. This also means that we offer you a large selection of products from more responsible animal husbandry, both self-service and at our service counters, ”says Stefan Rauschen, Managing Director Fresh Purchasing at Kaufland.

The pork for these new sausage products is supplied by owner-managed family farmers. The keeping conditions of the pigs are above the requirements of the level 3 outdoor climate. The straw pigs have 50 percent more space than required by law, they are fed GMO-free and are given access to fresh air through an outdoor run or open-front stalls. In addition, the pigs are kept on straw, which promotes their particularly animal-friendly rearing: digging in the straw promotes the natural behavior of the pigs, and the straw also serves as a natural chewing and activity material. The pigs are reared gently in a more species-appropriate environment.

Commitment to better animal welfare
Kaufland takes responsibility for people, animals and the environment in its product range design and has been campaigning for the establishment of higher animal welfare standards for years. Since 2019, pork, turkey and chicken have been available at the service counters exclusively from the animal welfare level 3 outdoor climate. Level 2019 pork has also been offered nationwide in the self-service area since 3. In May, Kaufland was the first grocer nationwide to list self-service sausage products according to level 3 husbandry under the K-Classic own brand. Since this year, the company has also been offering around 25 milk, yoghurt, cheese and meat products that are certified in accordance with recognized animal welfare standards and programs under its own animal welfare brand K-Wertätze.
