ITW pays €3,57 for each piglet

Piglet rearers can register again for the Animal Welfare Initiative (ITW). Registration in the database is possible from September 1st to September 30th. The animal welfare fee of €3,57 is paid for each piglet that can be proven to have been delivered to a fattener who takes part in the ITW. This step helps close the chain between fattening and piglet rearing to ensure identity from birth by 2024.

Businesses that have de-registered in the past or have dropped out are also permitted to register. Each pet owner can freely choose a start date for participation between November 1, 2022 and April 30, 2023. Before the audit permit is granted and thus the approval is made possible, a budget check must first take place. "We are currently assuming that all interested piglet rearers can be approved," says Robert Römer, Managing Director of ITW. The term of the operations is limited to June 30, 2024.

“We are pleased to enable other piglet breeders to participate in the Animal Welfare Initiative. For years, industry has been pursuing the goal of ensuring that pigs are identified from birth and would like to implement this as soon as possible. This means even more transparency for the consumer when shopping and a giant step for the pet owner,” Römer continues.

The inclusion of further piglet rearers also offers new opportunities for sow farmers, who form a unit with the piglet rearers in the current program phase of the ITW and thus already guarantee the first step towards identity from birth.

About the Initiative animal welfare
With the Tierwohl (ITW) initiative launched in 2015, the partners from agriculture, the meat industry, food retail and gastronomy commit themselves to their joint responsibility for animal husbandry, animal health and animal welfare in livestock husbandry. The animal welfare initiative supports farmers in implementing measures for the welfare of their livestock that go beyond the legal standards. The implementation of these measures is monitored across the board by the Animal Welfare Initiative. The Animal Welfare Initiative's product seal only identifies products that come from animals from participating companies in the Animal Welfare Initiative. The animal welfare initiative is gradually establishing more animal welfare on a broad basis and is continuously being further developed in the process.
