Consumers in Germany want to know how the animals whose meat they buy at the counter or in the supermarket lived. The Animal Husbandry Labeling Act came into force on August 24, 2023. The state-mandated labeling is now intended to ensure transparency and clarity with regard to the Animal husbandry care for. Retail chains have had their own labeling for some time. The nationwide uniform regulation is new. In this way, all shoppers should be able to clearly see how an animal whose meat they are buying in the supermarket or butcher was raised. The law initially applies to fresh pork that comes from animals kept, slaughtered and processed in Germany. However, it should be quickly expanded to cover the entire life cycle of animals, other animal species and other areas in the recycling chain; i.e. gastronomy, sausage products and the like.

There are five types of husbandry:

Stable: The husbandry during fattening takes place at least in accordance with the legal minimum requirements.

Stable+space: The pigs have at least 12,5 percent more space available compared to the legal minimum standard. The pens must have roughage, which is provided in addition to the activity material, and are structured by various elements. These can be, for example, partitions, different levels, different temperature or light ranges.

Fresh air stable: The outside climate in each pen has a significant influence on the stable climate. The pigs have access to different climate areas at all times.

Run/pasture: The pigs have access to an outdoor area all day long or are kept outdoors without a permanent stable building during this period. The run may be reduced for the required duration of cleaning or for a short time if this is absolutely necessary in individual cases for animal welfare reasons.

Biography: Animal husbandry complies with the requirements of the EU organic regulation. This means that the pigs have an even larger area to run around and even more space in the stable.
