German market for Parma ham expands in the self-service area

Consorzio del Prosciutto di Parma satisfied with the results of the first seven months of this year

Sales of sliced ​​and packaged Parma ham are growing steadily. A total of 2004 tons of self-service goods were sold from January to July 1.588, an increase of 14,1 percent compared to the same period of the previous year. In packets this means more than 15,5 million pieces.

The development of the sliced ​​and packaged Parma ham on the domestic market was encouraging, increasing by 412 percent to 14,2 tons. 3,9 million packs left the supermarkets in Italy.

The export of self-service goods, which accounts for 20 percent of total exports and is primarily concentrated on European countries, was able to achieve an increase of 1.177 percent with a total of 11,6 tons (14 million packs). The British were unbeaten in consumption of self-service goods with 388 tons or 4,1 million packages, followed by France (240 tons / 2,5 million packages) and Switzerland (127 tons / 1,5 million packages) . In Germany, 118 tons of sliced ​​Parma ham were consumed from January to July, an increase of 18,4 percent compared to the previous year. The Germans came up with 1,2 million packs of Parma ham.

Outstanding results were in Japan, which posted a 60 percent increase, and in the Scandinavian countries, where increases ranged from 30 to 52 percent for sliced ​​and packaged ham.

"The increases in exports that we have seen in recent years are largely due to increases in sales of self-service goods," says Stefano Fanti, director of the Consorzio del Prosciutto di Parma. "We are very satisfied with the sales figures for the first seven months of this year and assume that this positive development will continue in the coming months".
