Less poultry meat exported

Germany also purchased less from France

From January to May this year, France exported a good 235.700 tons of poultry meat, which was seven percent less than in 2003. In particular, deliveries to the other old EU countries shrank by 13 percent. The most important customer was Germany with around 22.150 tons of poultry meat; compared to the previous year, however, this was nine percent less. Only in Italy was France able to sell significantly more goods with 9.700 tons.

Around 60 percent of French exports or 141.100 tons went to third countries. Sales in the countries of the Middle East are traditionally strong, but there were sometimes quite significant losses. Exports to Saudi Arabia fell by 13 percent to just under 39.600 tons; nevertheless, Saudi Arabia remains France's strongest single customer. There was growth, for example, in Oman, with just over 15.000 tons, 36 percent more than in 2003. In Africa as a whole, four percent more goods were sold at 26.300 tons.

World meat production is expanding

South America and Asia are the largest growth markets

World meat production is growing continuously, increasing by around a third within ten years. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), meat production worldwide was 2003 million tons in 253,5, compared to just 191,0 million tons ten years ago.

However, there were considerable differences in development between the individual regions: In percentage terms, meat production in South America has increased most significantly since 1993, increasing by around 70 percent to 29,6 million tons in 2003. However, the most important growth market in absolute terms is Asia, where Meat production increased by almost 57 percent to 103,8 million tons in ten years. Increases of 28 percent to 49,8 million tons of meat were recorded in North and Central America and of 27 percent to 11,6 million tons and in Africa. At 5,7 million tonnes, Oceania produced 24 percent more meat than ten years ago. Meat production in Europe, on the other hand, has probably reached its level of saturation: the 2003 million tons produced in 53,0 were a good three percent less than in 1993.

Safety for meat: system comparison IKB - QS

IKB has held up 'comparatively' well

GIQS (Border Crossing Integrated Quality Assurance) eV is a dynamic network of European organizations in the agricultural and food industry. In its projects, GIQS brings together companies, research institutes, public and private organizations for the further development of cross-company and cross-border quality management. Solutions for the requirements of the new EU food law according to "Food Safety from Stable to Table" are developed. In July of this year, GIQS examined the two quality assurance systems IKB (Netherlands) and QS (Germany). The result of this comparison is not necessarily surprising, but still interesting for everyone who values quality and safety in the meat industry.

The meat industry plays an important role along the German-Dutch border, particularly in the Rhein-Waal and Gronau Euregios. Around 30.000 farmers produce around 16 million pigs here every year, and over 80 small and medium-sized farms and some multinational companies specialize in slaughtering and meat processing. The open EU borders make free trade in goods between the Netherlands and Germany easy - if it weren't for the different opinions on food safety and quality. In the two countries, the pig sector produces according to quite different specifications: The Dutch work with their tried and tested IKB chain system, while in Germany production is carried out according to the regulations of the relatively new QS. Pig farmers who strive for unrestricted freedom in trading their piglets and slaughter pigs must meet the requirements of both systems. The GIQS study assessed the differences between the two systems and explored the possibilities of using a common audit checklist.

Pleasure instead of burden – Norway is a role model when it comes to breastfeeding

International symposium at the BfR for the 10th anniversary of the National Breastfeeding Commission

Breast milk is the best, most convenient and least expensive food for the newborn. Breastfeeding should therefore actually be a matter of course for mothers. But it isn't, as a look at current statistics shows. In Germany, more than 90 percent of babies born in hospitals are placed on the mother's breast. At the age of 6 months, however, only 48 percent of babies are able to enjoy the super cocktail. Not enough, according to the BfR, because breast milk is tailored precisely to the needs of the child and protects both mother and child from illnesses. "The National Breastfeeding Committee at the BfR, which was set up 10 years ago, has set itself the goal of Norwegian conditions," explains Chair Professor Hildegard Przyrembel. "There, at the age of 6 months, 80% of the children are still exclusively breastfed."

The cause of this Norwegian "breastfeeding miracle" is one of the topics of the international symposium to which the National Breastfeeding Commission invited experts from all over the world to mark its 10th anniversary. Around 30 years ago, Norway was in a similar situation to Germany today: due to the medicalization of childbirth, the separation of mother and newborn for reasons of hygiene and the availability of bottled meals at all times (as prescribed by doctors) was the Number of mothers still breastfeeding in the sixth month after childbirth fell to 30%. "The turnaround started in the 70s," says Professor Gro Nylander of Rikshospitalet in Oslo. “It reflects the new self-image of women, but also follows from the fact that the state and the public health system, together with employers, have created conditions that allow Norwegian women to exclusively breastfeed their children for more than six months. In addition, there is a fundamental change in public opinion, which no longer perceives breastfeeding as a burden but as a pleasure.”

This method is also used for other important economic indicators from the Federal Statistical Office, such as gross domestic product or imports and exports.

Slaughter weights of the calves increased

Cattle and pigs a little easier

In Germany, the cattle delivered to the slaughterhouses weighed slightly less in the first half of the current year than in the same period last year. According to official information, the average weight of the commercially slaughtered cattle of all categories was 327,5 kilograms, which was 600 grams less than from January to June 2003.

This has halted the recently observed trend towards heavier animals, at least for the time being.

Founding congress of the "Platform Nutrition and Exercise eV"

In balance – for a healthy life!

On September 29, 2004, around 1000 participants from all over Germany attended the one-day founding congress of the “Nutrition and Exercise Platform” association in Berlin. The congress marks the start of concerted work to prevent and combat obesity in children and young people in Germany. "The necessary persuasiveness and dynamism to bring about long-term change can only be achieved through the cooperation of many actors who are committed together," said Prof. Dr. medical Erik Harms, chairman of the platform's recently elected board of directors and president of the German Society for Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine. The eight founding members - the Federal Government, the food industry, the German Society for Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, the CMA Centrale Marketing-Gesellschaft der Deutschen Agrarwirtschaft mbH, the Union Food-Genuss-Gaststätten, the German Sports Association / German Sports Youth, the Federal Parents' Council and the umbrella organizations of the Statutory health insurance companies - presented their programs. The founding program is entitled "In balance - for a healthy life". Diverse fields of action are now waiting for the association: In addition to the documentation and evaluation of the international and national status on the causes and prevention of obesity, criteria for “good practice” in preventive measures are to be published in the near future based on these findings. The transfer of this knowledge and the factual information of the public are the further steps on the way to a new consciousness in the population.

As a founding member, the CMA welcomes the fact that actors with very different backgrounds are pulling together via the "Nutrition and Exercise Platform". "With the best professional practice and high legal standards, German farmers produce high-quality raw materials for a wide range of different foods. While the quality of these products is still in their own hands, the decision as to when, how and how often they are consumed is ultimately in someone else's hands - in the hands of the consumer," explained Dr. Andrea Dittrich, head of the CMA Science PR department and member of the association's extended board, at the joint presentation of the platform.
