The mill saves 600 tons of plastic

The zur Mühlen Group wants to do its part to save plastic and make its packaging more sustainable. The company can already report great success. All of the group's packaging has been checked in recent months and revised together with the customer. Depending on the product, product format and product weight, the strengths of the top and bottom film were reduced - in some cases by up to 20 percent.

"However, we made sure that the film properties remained unchanged and that the safety for the products was maintained," emphasizes Jürgen Kowalski, Head of Packaging Development and Optimization at zur Mühlen.

The plastic reduction has already been implemented, for example, for products for numerous retail customers throughout Germany. “This will allow us to save almost 600.000 kilograms of plastic this year,” emphasizes Kowalski. An important signal in times of debate about climate change. Talks with other customers are ongoing to drive the reduction further.

In addition to the reduction in packaging, the zur Mühlen Group is also launching further packaging innovations: "This year we will be presenting three innovations that can reduce another 40% plastic," says Maximilian Tönnies. Managing director of the group. “We are also working with partners on solutions to use up to 70% recycled PET. These are very specific measures in our sustainability strategy ”.

With its brands Gutfried, Böklunder, Lutz, Könecke, Redlefsen and Schulte, the zur Mühlen Group is one of the leading European companies in the meat and sausage industry.
