Tönnies completes its animal welfare range

The Tönnies Group has expanded its Fairfarm animal welfare program in husbandry type 3 to include cattle farming. The market leader from Rheda-Wiedenbrück thus completes the animal welfare range for pork and beef. All forms of keeping are now on offer.

The Tönnies Group now also covers all types of cattle farming in accordance with the requirements of the ITW (Animal Welfare Initiative): starting with level 1, which meets the legal minimum standard, through to organic. Consumers now have a full choice when purchasing meat from Tönnies products.

“The basis is the Fairfarm program, which was developed a few years ago together with producers, trading partners and agricultural organizations for the pork sector and has now been expanded to include the beef category,” explains Markus Tiekmann, Managing Director of Sales at Tönnies Rind. “There, too, we set standards that are well above the legal requirements. This includes significantly more space, more outdoor climate stimuli, more fresh air and more exercise, as well as GMO-free feeding."

The associated testing concept is based on the ITW criteria for husbandry level 3. The company monitors the welfare of the animals with the help of audits via a neutral and independent certification company.
