Scientists: Significantly poorer health status Ökoputen

When Ökohaltung of fattening consumer assumes that the animals are particularly well and lead this to slaughter a carefree and "healthy" life. Scientists have looked more closely.

In fact, the intensive turkey feed is loaded in many stocks with significant problems of animal health. The result of justified criticism from the viewpoint of animal welfare. In a study by the Institute of Food Hygiene of the University of Leipzig, it was examined how the eco-turkey farming in comparison with the conventional can contribute to solving this problem. For this purpose, the results of post-mortem inspection of organically and conventionally slaughtered turkeys in the period from January 2004 2009 were evaluated through June in an EU-approved slaughterhouse. During this time 307.100 turkeys were taken and analyzed from an ecological attitude and 255.433 turkeys from conventional attitude for slaughter.

  • The result contradicts the usual ideas. Compared mortem inspection findings resulted in organic turkey with 1,9% a significantly higher Gesamtverwurf than conventionally held turkeys (1,43%), The Gesamtverwurf has been detected in the three categories "carcases", animal body part and organs.
  • Whole carcasses were unfit for human consumption due judged insufficient bleeding, agony, serositis, depth dermatitis, extensive infected and inflamed injuries, hematomas, infected breast blisters, peritonitis, ascites, abscesses, underdevelopment and emaciation.
  • Parts of the carcase have been mainly assessed as unfit because of localized injury, inflammation, fracture-related bleeding and encapsulated abscesses.
  • The altered organs were primarily a result of the findings ascites syndrome, gout, fatty liver, liver necrosis, granulomatous inflammation, Green - judges hepatorenal syndrome, fibrosis, cirrhosis of the liver as unfit.

The expected improved health status in organic turkey was not confirmed in the investigation, rather the opposite seemed to be the case. It came in two forms of entertainment in basically the same health problems.

The cause of this unexpected result of the use of unsuitable races in the eco-attitude has to be discussed. It would also be necessary to consider whether the requirements for eco-entertainment actually offer optimum conditions for turkey, was the conclusion of the investigation.

Even with organic cattle and pigs Bio-point slaughter findings indicate a poorer health status.
