The aim of the survey was to assess the growing influence of television, smart phones, tablet PCs and laptops on our news consumption and the related habits. The respondents belonged to the group of top earners and had at least three of the following devices: televisions, tablet PC, smartphone and laptop / desktop computer.

The following results were observed:

  • Tablet PC owners don't follow less, they follow more newscasts. 43 percent of tablet users said they watch more TV today than they did five years ago. Most of them use their tablet PC and television at the same time.
  • News is mostly consumed by young professionals between the ages of 25-34.
  • Common "second screens" for consuming news, with users often using devices in parallel. 83 percent of all those who own a tablet PC use it while watching television. The television (42 percent) is still used most frequently for news consumption - followed by laptops (29 percent), smartphones (18 percent) and tablets ( 10 percent).
  • News consumers expect ad breaks on mobile devices (79 percent tablet, 84 percent smartphone) almost as much as they do on television (87 percent) and the web (84 percent).
  • Respondents responded to ads regardless of device or screen. 1 in 7 users responded to a mobile advertisement in the past four weeks; 1 out of 5 on TV commercial; 1 of 4 on advertising on a desktop screen.

The survey found that different platforms complement each other rather than compete, allowing users to use their devices depending on the time of day. Smartphones and laptops are mainly used during working hours, especially around 13 p.m. TV usage increases dramatically after 17pm; at 19 p.m., televisions are used 50 percent more than any other device.

The survey also found that users turn on the TV first (42 percent) when it comes to extraordinary news events, but the majority (66 percent) then turn to the Internet for more background information. National and international news were most important to respondents (84 percent, 82 percent), closely followed by local news (79 percent). Financial and business news (61 percent) were rated as more valuable than news about sports (56 percent) and arts/entertainment (43 percent).
