Sustainable packaging solutions with added value

Wolfertschwenden. From September 25 to 27, MULTIVAC will be presenting a complete portfolio of solutions for packaging food and non-food products at FachPack 2018 in Nuremberg. One focus of the trade fair is the presentation of packaging concepts that meet the requirements for resource conservation and recyclability. MULTIVAC will be demonstrating the processing of recyclable materials based on paper fibers on a R 105 MF thermoforming packaging machine and a T 800 traysealer, which is integrated into a fully automated line. In addition to other exhibits, the new thermoforming packaging machine generation X-Line will be presented, which is equipped for digitized production and future technologies thanks to its comprehensive sensor system and thus sets new standards in the market.

Multi FreshTM PaperBoard application on traysealers
The production of MultiFreshTM-Skin packaging based on cardboard blanks is shown by MULTIVAC on a T 800 traysealer that is integrated into an automated line. Cardboard blanks with different grammages and different sealing and barrier layers can be processed. The pack can be designed in such a way that the end user can separate the cardboard carrier from the plastic barrier layer and recycle it.

The traysealer line is complemented by a multifunctional GMS 520 singlecut meat portioner from TVI, which can process all types of red meat and poultry with the least amount of personnel, in every consistency, for every portion and always with optimized weight and residue. The packs are labeled using a L 310 conveyor belt labeler, which applies a D label to the packs. In addition, a compressed air applicator is integrated into the line for attaching promotional labels, which are increasingly being used on packs in the fresh produce shelf.

MultiFresh ™ PaperBoard application on thermoforming packaging machines
The production of MultiFresh ™ -PaperBoard packs on thermoforming packaging machines will be presented using the R 105 MF. The solution is characterized by a high level of economic efficiency. One of the factors contributing to this is the processing of the material from the roll, which ensures greater material efficiency compared to the processing of cardboard blanks. In terms of shape, the spectrum ranges from flat packaging troughs to packs with higher cavities, in which products of different heights and shapes can be packed.

New standards in the field of thermoforming packaging: the X-line
The new thermoforming packaging machine generation X-line offers a large number of innovative features a high level of additional customer benefits in terms of pack quality, process reliability, output volume and future viability. The machine, which has a sensor system that is unique in the market, produces packs of excellent quality without start-up losses, as it is already optimally set by the Pack Pilot at the start of operation and, thanks to the comprehensive sensor system, is parameterized at the optimal operating point. This leads to significant savings in terms of products, packaging materials and production time - and at the same time guarantees higher process reliability and cycle performance and thus better output. The innovative tool and the intuitive user concept also contribute to a high level of process reliability. The new Multi Sensor Control ensures optimized continuous operation.

The continuously generated process data form a basis for the provision of MULTIVAC Smart Services, which make it possible to design the packaging processes even more efficiently. The X-line is optimally equipped for further solutions such as Industry 4.0, preventive maintenance, condition monitoring, benchmarking or the creation of comprehensive OEE analyzes.

Economical solution for the production of contour packs, even in small batches
The R 145 thermoforming packaging machine with the innovative BAS 20 shape and contour cut enables the economical production of contour packs, even in small batches. Thanks to short set-up times, it offers a high degree of flexibility with regard to the format to be produced, the packaging design and the packaging materials used. The BAS 20 can be designed for waste-free cutting and thus contributes significantly to reduced packaging material consumption and lower packaging costs.

Labeling and inspection solutions
MULTIVAC is demonstrating its extensive expertise in the field of labeling and inspection solutions with three selected exhibits. The L 35x labeler series was specially designed to seal the open edges of folded products such as package inserts, outserts or mailings with the help of labels. The L 352 model with a label dispenser will be presented at FachPack, with which package inserts and outserts can be sealed on the back with a label and self-mailers with both a label on the front edge of the product and a further label on the rear edge.

The L 352 can be connected to folding machines from various manufacturers and takes over the paper products directly. A central height adjustment on the frame enables quick adjustment to different working heights, separate servo drives for the upper and lower belt transport allow adjustment to different product thicknesses and paper formats. The changeover to other label widths and label positions takes place via easily exchangeable dispensing edges in connection with special format plates for the pressure system. Depending on the folded product, the highest speeds of up to 12.000 pieces per hour can be achieved with this solution.

MULTIVAC will be showing the I 410 optical inspection system from its portfolio of inspection solutions. Thanks to its high-resolution, height-adjustable line scan cameras and powerful image processing, it guarantees reliable quality and identification control from above and below. The possible uses range from checking the completeness of the pack to checking the presence and position of the label to checking the imprint - including pattern and text recognition, text checking, legibility and code checks. The advanced image acquisition technology makes it possible that meaningful images in high resolution can be transmitted and verified even at high speeds in the packaging process.

The exhibits also include a checkweigher with an integrated metal detector of the type I 211. The search coil used works with a multi-simultaneous frequency and thus offers higher sensitivity and improved product compensation. This means that even with a high product effect, the smallest metallic foreign bodies can be reliably detected.
