"Fair & Good": ALDI enters into cooperation with animal welfare pioneer NEULAND and FAIRFARM

Essen / Mülheim ad Ruhr (July 18.07.2018, XNUMX). The ALDI Nord and ALDI SÜD corporate groups will in future be offering various fresh pork products from the standard providers “NEULAND” and “FAIRFARM” under the “Fair & Gut” brand. In this way, the companies are consistently continuing their path of advocating improved animal husbandry conditions and creating more transparency for customers.

Under the roof of the own animal welfare brand "Fair & Gut", which launched six poultry fresh meat products in January, will become ALDI Nord and ALDI SOUTH from 27. August 2018 in selected branches in North Rhine-Westphalia, Hamburg, Lower Saxony, Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern a total of eight fresh pork products sell. Under their own brand, they offer pork, pork fillet, minute steaks, pork steak ribeye-cut, ham goulash, sliced meat, ham escalope and neck steaks.

"We can only improve livestock conditions sustainably and broadly if we go along this path with our farmers and do some building work. Always with the goal in view, to offer our customers a suitable selection of products from animal-friendly attitudes nationwide in all branches, "explains Rayk Mende, Managing Director Corporate Responsibility at ALDI Nord. "The volumes required for business groups such as ALDI SÜD and ALDI Nord are a major challenge for our partners and can only be achieved through long-term, trusting cooperation," adds Philipp Skorning, Group Buying Director and responsible for quality and corporate responsibility at ALDI SOUTH. Martin Steinmann, longtime NEULAND farmer and member of the executive board of the NEULAND producer association, explains: "For 30 years, NEULAND has stood for a more animal-friendly attitude in rural structures. We want to offer our high standard to another buyer group. "

Criteria and availability
With the cooperation between NEULAND and ALDI it was possible for the first time to sell the products of the animal welfare brand, which has been established for almost 30 years, at a German discounter. The NEULAND quality meat program has made high demands on animal and environmental protection since its inception and supplements the basic "Fair & Gut" criteria with additional ones.

The pork products are marked with the NEULAND logo and meet the following criteria, among others:

  • twice as much space as required by law
  • Straw as additional feed and employment material
  • Subdivision of the stables into different functional areas
  • Access to fresh air and natural light over stables with a spout
  • no use of genetically modified feed - exclusively domestic feed or from neighboring regions
  • Production on small businesses with traditional structure
  • short transport routes to slaughterhouses

The products of the standard supplier "FAIRFARM" bear the FAIRFARM logo and meet the following criteria, among others:

  • twice as much space as required by law
  • Straw as additional feed and employment material
  • Subdivision of the stables into different functional areas
  • Access to fresh air and daylight via an open stable
  • no use of genetically modified feed during fattening

ALDI's own brand "Fair & Gut"
At ALDI, “Fair & Gut” stands for “fair trade” and “well treated”. In terms of price level and the criteria to be met, the products range between meat from conventional animal husbandry and organic meat with the applicable requirements of the EU organic seal. At the same time, the new brand and the long-term supply contracts concluded for it support farmers who incur additional costs for new or larger stables, for example, and additional outdoor areas and GM-free feed. The inclusion of further products in the range of ALDI North and ALDI SÜD is being examined for the future.

More about ALDI's commitment to animal welfare can be found on the respective corporate websites of Aldi north and ALDI SOUTH summarized. You can find out more about the "Fair & Gut" brand here: fairundgut.aldi.de
