Poultry industry concludes cooperation agreement with BfR

Berlin, January 16, 2019. Prof. Dr. dr Andreas Hensel, President of the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR), and Friedrich-Otto Ripke, President of the ZDG Central Association of the German Poultry Industry e. V., yesterday afternoon in Berlin signed a cooperation agreement for a joint research project to evaluate diagnostic data from the German slaughter poultry industry. The contract stipulates that the poultry industry will provide the BfR scientists with anonymized data from the antibiotics monitoring and the health control program for chickens and turkeys. The BfR takes over the evaluation of this database with the central aim of evaluating the data for the internal risk assessment in a qualified manner and, if necessary, using it to identify possible weak points. "With its scientifically sound risk assessment and risk communication, the BfR does important work," said ZDG President Ripke on the sidelines of the contract signing. "As the German slaughter poultry industry, we are happy to work constructively with the BfR and make our contribution to a qualified risk assessment."

The data provided is used for internal evaluation by BfR scientists
When rearing and slaughtering chickens and turkeys, a large number of animal and herd-related data are collected on farms and in slaughterhouses, among other things within the framework of the QS scheme, which the BfR has not yet had access to. However, an evaluation of this data is of clear relevance for the BfR for the state task of risk assessment and a stronger linking of information from the food chain to the producer level. The joint research project that started today is intended to provide the required data. The data provided by industry is used for internal evaluation by BfR scientists.
