Mass slaughter of cattle in New Zealand

More than 120.000 cattle in New Zealand have to be slaughtered due to an infectious disease. The disease is on Mycoplasma bovis attributed to a pathogen found in cattle that causes tuberculosis. The bacterium can be transmitted to humans.

The authorities want to kill all cattle on the affected farms, even if some are still healthy. Around 24.000 cattle have already been slaughtered, with at least 124.000 more to be killed in the next year or two.
