Piglet castration continues without anesthesia

The federal government has decided to allow piglet castration - without anesthetic - for another two years. Actually, this should be banned from January 01st. Around 20 million piglets are castrated in Germany every year. Many scientists see the procedure as painful and critical, the young animals are not anaesthetized. The reason for castration in male pigs is the later "boar smell", which is not accepted by the consumer. In Denmark, local anesthesia has long been common for castration, but even with this the pain cannot be completely eliminated.

Mind you, for this operation not the meat industry is responsible, but politics and agriculture. However, a method is being worked on whereby the young animals are castrated under anesthetic.
