Federal cabinet adopts new climate protection law

At its meeting last Friday, the federal cabinet passed the new federal climate protection law. It provides for greenhouse gas emissions to be gradually reduced compared to 1990 as follows: by 2030 by at least 65 percent, by 2040 by at least 88 percent, and by 2045 net greenhouse gas neutrality is to be achieved. The Federal Minister for Food and Agriculture, Julia Klöckner, explains: “We have adjusted the reduction targets across all sectors. This is a commitment to more sustainability, an important signal to the younger generations: We are placing less burdens on them. The new sector targets for agriculture are ambitious, but I think they are feasible for our area. Because I attached great importance to a sense of proportion and feasibility. Appropriate supportive measures and financial resources are necessary to achieve the goals. Agriculture and forestry are the only economic sectors that can store carbon naturally. And unlike other sectors, they will not be able to afford to become emission-free because they work in biological systems. That is one of the reasons why I submitted a protocol declaration to the Federal Cabinet today. "
