Bio-Siegel is a success story

Seal for products from organic farming is 15 years old!
15 years ago, on September 5, 2001, the state organic seal was introduced in Germany. At the start there were 15 companies with 85 labeled products. 15 years later, 74.610 products from 4.781 companies have registered for use of the organic label. A survey by the Thünen Institute in 2013 showed that around 94 percent of consumers are familiar with the organic label.

Federal Minister of Food and Agriculture Christian Schmidt said: "The German organic seal is a success story that we will continue to write. Almost every German knows the hexagonal logo as a reliable identifier for organically produced food. Buyers have to be able to rely on one thing: where If it says organic, it has to be organic. The figures show that organic is becoming more and more popular with consumers: In 2015, the organic market in Germany generated sales of more than eight billion euros, and the trend is growing rapidly. In Germany, organic has gone from being a niche to a strong growth market . The organic seal is also an effective marketing product that creates income for farmers. My goal is to further increase the proportion of organic farming. This is another reason why I initiated the future strategy for organic farming, which I will be presenting at BioFach at the beginning of 2017 will."

With a turnover of EUR 8,6 billion (food and beverages), Germany is the largest sales market for organic products within the European Union and is in second place worldwide after the USA. Most products with the organic seal are hot drinks, i.e. coffee and tea (10.595), followed by herbs and spices (8358).
