Organic products still in high demand

Organic food continues to enjoy increasing popularity. After a high in the first year of Corona, sales of organic products rose again in 2021 by 5,8 percent to 15,87 billion euros. According to preliminary estimates by market experts, the organic share of the food market will thus increase to 6,8 percent.

This long-term trend is also confirmed by the results of the current eco-barometer, which the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture regularly commissions: 38 percent of those surveyed stated that they often (2021 percent) or exclusively (33 percent) buy organic products in 5. Looking to the future even appreciate 47 percent of respondents that they will often (41 percent) or exclusively (6 percent) buy organic food.

The most important results of the Eco-Barometer 2021

  • In 2021, too, those surveyed stated that they most frequently bought organic eggs, fruit and vegetables, followed by potatoes, dairy products and meat and sausage products.
  • Organic products continue to be bought most frequently in supermarkets: Nine out of ten organic buyers surveyed use the organic range in supermarkets.
  • Regional origin, species-appropriate animal husbandry, a healthy diet and food that is as natural as possible are the most important reasons for buying organic food, with approval rates of more than 90 percent each, with regional origin coming ahead of species-appropriate for the first time this year with an approval rate of 93 percent animal husbandry (92 percent).
  • In the survey on "awareness of the German organic seal", 82 percent stated that they were familiar with the appearance of the German organic seal, although the respondents did not have the organic seal. The survey showed that awareness was particularly high in the group of young people up to the age of 29 (93 percent) and within the age group between 60 and 69 years (91 percent).
