China opens the market for German poultry

The Federal Minister of Food and Agriculture, Julia Klöckner, received her Chinese counterpart, Han Changfu, at the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture in Berlin last Sunday, on the eve of the German-Chinese intergovernmental consultations.

During a working lunch, both ministers discussed topics relating to export and import, developments in the digitization of agriculture and requirements for the food sector. For export, Klöckner and Han have agreed that China will reopen the market for poultry from Germany. After the occurrence of bird flu cases, it was blocked for the German producers. After time-consuming investigations into the situation, the Chinese side has now come to the conclusion that there is no longer any reason to worry about German poultry.

Julia Klöckner also addressed the comprehensive preventive measures taken by Germany and the EU with a view to African swine fever and advocated a differentiated view from the Chinese side that there would not be a complete ban on imports of pork from Germany, but that outbreaks in Europe should be viewed regionally.

In the field of research and the development of rural areas, both Ministers of Agriculture spoke out in favor of a closer exchange. The focus will increasingly be on the question of digitization in the agriculture and food industry. Federal Minister Klöckner therefore invited her colleague to the upcoming Global Forum for Food and Agriculture (GFFA) in Berlin as part of the International Green Week. The focus of the World Forum will be mechanization and digitization in agriculture.
