The national team gets reinforcements

Frankfurt am Main, March 25, 2019. In the two-day selection process that took place at the Center for Nutrition and Health in Koblenz, twelve selected young professionals from the butcher trade had to show whether they had what it takes to be a team member. In addition to excellent technical skills, the key success factors in the second selection competition for the national team of the butcher's trade were inventiveness, organizational talent and team spirit.

The core of the selection process was a multi-part so-called "surprise discipline" in which the participants - previously divided into teams of three - were able to work freely with previously unknown starting materials. The special challenge also lay in the fact that the four teams only had one common and tightly dimensioned shopping basket at their disposal. The aim of the jury in this discipline was not only to check technical ability and improvisational talent, but also to be able to assess the team spirit and ability to work in a team of the participants.

They found the fact that they were thrown “in the deep end” right from the start to be a good challenge. In the final assessment of the selection process by the participants, the “surprise discipline” received an above-average rating. This was perhaps also due to the fact that in the second part of the task the teams had to design an advertisement for the products manufactured in part one, which then had to be presented to the assembled team.

In addition, the six female and six male applicants had to prepare 32 pieces of finger food or a grill plate, depending on whether they had been trained in sales or as butchers. In order to challenge the quick-wittedness and stress resistance of the participants aged 19 to 27, they were repeatedly addressed by a juror in the role of a "reporter" and confronted with deliberately critical questions.

The beginning and end of the selection process were detailed rounds of talks with the whole group, from the presentation of their own application video to the open feedback round in which the participants could describe their impressions of the competition. The results of the competition are recommendations from the jury, consisting of apprentice waiters from the state guild associations, to the Executive Committee of the German Butchers' Association, whose members then decide on admission to the national butchers' team.
