BVDF calls for the #NewDeal

Everyday life without sausage bread? For many people unthinkable! Because meat and sausage products are staple foods for almost 90 percent of the German population. And so the sale of sausage in Germany has remained constant over the past few years. Nevertheless: The current discussions on the subject of nutrition and food particularly affect the German meat industry. That is why the Federal Association of the German Meat Industry (BVDF) is now stronger and louder than before. The BVDF recently countered a surcharge from a deep-freeze manufacturer with a full-page advertisement in the food newspaper.

Sarah Dhem, President of the BVDF: "We value our own strong anchoring in the middle of society. We are working on this in our companies and with our products. We are on the way: The nutrition of the future, of sausage and meat products Essential is important to us. That is why we are happy about everything that drives the discussion. Our contribution as a meat industry: We are changing, making our products even better - also so that the producers get a fair return for their work, "said Dhem .

Quality and food safety are two central issues that play a central role not only for consumers, but also for the BVDF. As a founding member of the Tierwohl Initiative (ITW), the association is actively committed to increasing animal welfare in livestock husbandry. Sustainability is also very important: More and more meat and sausage manufacturers are making their contribution and are concerned with conserving resources, energy efficiency, reducing water and electricity consumption and reducing CO2 emissions.

The New Deal: "We all have to sit down at one table"

Meat and sausage products are an important economic engine for Germany, with sales forecast for 2020 of around 21,6 billion euros. And also an integral part of the regional culture of Germany. For Sarah Dhem, it is therefore not enough for retailers and farmers to discuss how to deal with change in society. For a NEW DEAL, everyone has to sit down at one table. In addition to retailers and farmers, politicians, consumers and food manufacturers in particular are called upon as an intermediate stage to participate in the discussion in order to enable the required and necessary positive change. This is already about the acceptance of reasonable prices.

Dhem: "We want a common understanding of the value of food, high standards that are binding for everyone and the optimization of control and information systems at all levels in order to be able to continue to guarantee the already high quality standards."

The Federal Association of the German Meat Industry eV (BVDF) in Bonn represents the interests of companies in the meat industry, i.e. the manufacturers of sausage products, ham and convenience products, which were among the leaders in 2018 with a turnover of around EUR 19 billion and around 65.000 employees Sectors of the German food industry count.
