DIL: strengthening cooperation with the Russian growth market

German Institute of Food Technologies (DIL) and All-Russian Research Institute of Meat Industry (VNIIMP) take on joint activities

The Russian food market is in growth and offers especially in the areas of product development and food technology has great potential. In particular, the many small and medium-sized companies in the German food industry can benefit from this positive development. The DIL is increasing its activities in Russia and will therefore propose also a bridge to the German economy.

On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the All-Russian Research Institute for the Meat Industry (VNIIMP), the International Conference for Innovative Meat Technologies took place in Moscow on December 08, 2010. The German Institute for Food Technology (DIL) was one of the invited guests from science, politics, industry, the press and abroad. The Quakenbrücker Research Institute was invited to introduce the 200 high-ranking participants to the areas of application of some of the process technologies researched by the DIL, which are used to specifically influence the structure and preservation of meat products. The processes discussed in the lecture, such as high pressure and shock wave technology, aroused great interest among the participants. The lively discussions at the subsequent reception made this clear.

VNIIMP and DIL also used the festive framework of the conference to sign a cooperation agreement. This regulates the future cooperation between the two institutes.

A first exchange of scientists will take place at the beginning of this year. Its aim is to test the technologies established at the DIL for the Russian market and to bring them directly to Russian meat producers. In addition, jointly organized events will follow, such as a German-Russian meat technology seminar planned for autumn 2011 in Quakenbrück. Here, German companies have the opportunity to establish contacts with the meat industry from Russia.

The two institutes are also starting joint, highly practice-oriented projects to promote new technologies in meat processing. For example, it is about the high-pressure treatment of meat products including the investigation of storage stability and quality. Research is also being carried out into the use of pulsating electrical fields to decontaminate pig blood and improve the storage stability of meat products. A final focus is the influence of electrohydraulic shock waves on the tenderization of beef and the breakdown of biological tissue.

The DIL would like to expand its field of activity on the Russian market through cooperation with the Moscow institute VNIIMP, one of the world's largest research institutes in the field of meat technology, which is also closely linked to the Russian food industry. Organized as a registered association and now supported by 130 companies, the DIL sees the opportunity to position itself as an intermediary in technology and knowledge transfer, to open the gates for German industry and to promote the high quality of a technology “Made in Germany” .

In November, the DIL started a collaboration with EURODON, Russia's market leader in turkey meat. This is about technological issues and quality management in the processing of meat products, which also leads to specific projects.
