Corona: Feed supply for animal husbandry must be guaranteed

The German Association for Animal Nutrition e. V. (DVT) points out that in the current exceptional situation, the feed industry is doing everything possible to ensure that the animals are supplied with high-quality feed. "In the approximately 300 compound feed plants in Germany, the employees work around the clock and support the farmers in caring for their animals for the production of food, such as dairy products, eggs and meat," says Dr. Hermann-Josef Baaken, spokesman for the DVT management clear in a statement.

Ensured care for the animals
"No animal will go hungry, that's for sure," assures Baaken. At the same time, the health of the employees has absolute priority. Should a company nevertheless encounter staff shortages due to illness or quarantine reasons, solutions can be found in specific individual cases - as has happened in the past with operational events.

Free movement of goods as a basis
The procurement of raw materials is important and indispensable for the production of feed. Around 80 percent of the feed raw materials come from Germany and are therefore available regionally. At the same time, the maintenance of logistics and free trade routes are imperative - especially within Germany, but also in the European Union and other countries. "For us as an industry that is part of the food chain, what is currently required above all is recognition as an indispensable area and therefore corresponding organizational support in order to maintain the supply chains with procurement, production and delivery of the goods for animal nutrition and ultimately for the animals to be able to,” says Baaken. To this end, the employees in the feed plants work extremely responsibly and carefully under the currently tightened conditions.
