Positive development in husbandry type labeling
The husbandry system has collected figures that document the distribution of the product range in the four levels for the different animal species. These figures are based on actual sales volumes throughout the year. Accordingly, despite the pandemic and economic challenges, there is a clear shift, for example, in pork products from level 1 (7,1 percent) to level 2 (84,9 percent) - i.e. products from the Animal Welfare Initiative (ITW) program. In 2021, the quantities of pork sold were still distributed at 22 percent in level 1 and 68 percent in level 2 on the self-service shelves.
The shifts and progress are a clear signal of the positive changes in the product range, also through the animal welfare initiative, comments Robert Römer, Managing Director of ITW. They are the result of the increasing conversion of product ranges to the Animal Welfare Initiative's animal welfare program." And in levels 3 and 4, retailers are also increasingly offering their customers more choices, which is also reflected in the service counters.
When it comes to offering poultry meat products, ITW's commitment has led to extensive parts of the poultry range being offered in level 2 (90,8 percent for chicken, 96,3 percent for turkey). Despite the economic crisis and the pandemic, the broad offering in levels 3 and 4 was maintained at 8,4 percent (chicken) and 3,3 percent (turkey) with a variety of products.
Beef from levels 3 and 4 was comparatively well represented at the service counter at 20,3 percent in 2022. In level 2, there is still slow growth at 3,8 percent. By far the largest proportion, just under 40 percent, was still in level 1 or not yet marked at all (36,8 percent). Growing quantities in level 2 are foreseeable as more dairy farms switch to programs such as QM+.
The corresponding labeling for milk, which has a decisive influence on the quantity availability of beef from stage 2 through the delivery of slaughter cows, will continue to grow in 2022. 3 percent of the milk sold came from level 4 and 18,1 animal welfare programs.
