Sustainable shopping at the fresh food counter

Kaufland offers its customers in all branches the opportunity to bring their own containers to the fresh food counter and thus save on plastic. With the introduction of a new fresh food tray, the company has found a practical way for all branches not to pack meat, sausage or cheese in foil, but to put it directly in the customer's own reusable can. "The customer's desire for more sustainability is our focus," says Patrick Höhn, CEO Freshness. "That is why we are pleased that with the introduction of the fresh food tray in all branches we can now offer a simple and uniform solution and thus successfully implement another measure as part of our plastic strategy."

The implementation
The process is very simple: If the customer buys at the fresh food counter, the container they have brought with them and has already opened is placed on the fresh food tray and passed over the counter. The employee places the fresh food tray with container on the scale and fills the desired goods in the can. Of course, only the net weight is calculated. The weight for the tray and can is automatically subtracted. After the customer has received his reusable can again, he attaches the receipt to it. "In this way, all hygiene regulations are fully adhered to," emphasizes Höhn.

Further measures
As part of the Schwarz Group REset Plastic's plastic strategy, Kaufland has set itself the goal of reducing its own plastic consumption by 2025 percent by 20. That is why the company is continuously working on reducing the use and consumption of plastic in its processes and other areas of influence. In addition to the reduction in plastic for products in the private label sector and sustainable range design, Kaufland also relies on environmentally friendly purchasing. So that customers can shop comfortably and sustainably, the company offers long-lasting shopping aids, such as fresh produce bags in the fruit and vegetable area, fabric bags made from organic certified cotton, stable permanent carrier bags, shopping boxes made from sustainably certified cardboard or space-saving plastic folding boxes
