Four Gold Awards at the German Packaging Award 2023
On Wednesday, September 13, 2023, the industry met at the invitation of the German Packaging Institute. V. (dvi) for the award ceremony of the German Packaging Awards 2023 in the Berlin Meistersaal. As part of the celebrations, the winners of the Gold Awards were also announced, with which the jury of the German Packaging Prize also recognized four particularly outstanding innovations from among the winners: an aluminum packaging for solid care cosmetics from Aroma Elite Naturkosmetik Manufaktur, a machine for the production of sustainable packaging made from common fibers from paper production and other natural fibers from Kiefel GmbH, a recyclable mono-PE stand-up bag with an outstanding oxygen barrier and deinkability from Siegwerk, and innovative battery packaging with a storage and separation system for full and empty batteries from student Leonie Theurer from HTWK Leipzig.
At 12 noon sharp, the gates of the Meistersaal opened for admission and a champagne reception for the award ceremony of the German Packaging Prize 2023 and the announcement of the Gold Awards. The dvi managing directors Kim Cheng and Winfried Batzke welcomed 150 managers and those responsible for innovation to the 60th anniversary of the largest packaging exhibition in Europe.
The dvi had already announced the 2023 winners of this year's German Packaging Award in August 34. At the event moderated by Matthias Mahr, editor of Grocery Practice, the representatives of the winning companies received their certificates and the newly designed winner's trophy. In a, as Mahr said when welcoming the participants, “a very appropriate place, because you are all masters of your craft.”
Big stage for big performances
“It became clear at the two-day jury meeting in the premises of our premium partner igepa Group in July that the highly innovative companies in our industry will not be stopped by the diverse global crises and challenges,” says dvi Managing Director Kim Cheng. “The industry is turning many levers across all materials, segments and areas of application to find clever, creative and intelligent solutions. Our jury was faced with the difficult task of identifying the best of the year from the large number of impressive new solutions. In the end, 34 particularly impressive innovations were able to prevail in ten categories. The four Gold Awards now crown the German Packaging Prize 2023,” says Cheng.

With the Gold Award, the jury of the German Packaging Prize this year also honored four innovations that stand out even among the packaging award winners.
Gold for Aroma Elite Combi Box
The Aroma Elite Combi Box from the Aroma Elite natural cosmetics manufactory is aluminum packaging for solid care cosmetics in which the packaging becomes part of the product. The jury praised the innovative solution for storing, protecting and using solid soaps, which allows the interior to adapt to the size of the product using a cleverly movable base. The breathable lid also acts as a base when using the soap. The attractive design also strengthens the positive perception of the brand.
Gold for NATUREFORMER KFT 90
With the advanced version of the NATUREFORMER KFT 90 from Kiefel GmbH, a machine for the production of sustainable packaging from common fibers from paper production and other natural fibers received the Gold Award 2023. According to the jury, the technology and, above all, its current technical implementation enables the production of packaging materials, With quality features such as variety of shapes, accuracy, stability and surface quality, the natural fiber-based molded parts in attractive packaging open up a wide range of application areas. Particular advantages arise above all from the holistic concept, which can be used within the framework of a wide range of raw materials from material preparation to the finished packaging. In addition, functions such as resealability or labeling can be integrated effectively.
Gold for the recyclable mono-PE stand-up pouch
The stand-up pouch with an outstanding oxygen barrier and deinkability for removing paint and coatings from Siegwerk Group Holding AG & Co. KG was developed as part of a collaboration between five partner companies along the value chain. By using a printable barrier coating, the bag is suitable as packaging for a wide range of demanding filling goods. The use of an appropriate primer allows the laminate structure to delaminate and deinking, so that the packaging can be recycled into almost colorless PE granules. This means that the granules are also available for a wide range of applications that require higher recyclate qualities.
Gold for the BattPack
Student Leonie Theurer from HTWK Leipzig was also pleased to receive a Gold Award. The jury honored an outstanding innovation that had been submitted in the young talent category sponsored by the premium partner FACHPACK. According to the jury, the folding box for batteries is a simple, super smart and innovative solution for storing and separating full and empty batteries. With a simple printed separator in the box, the batteries can be easily sorted into full and empty batteries. The printed scale on the box helps keep track of the number. The jury's conclusion: This student concept is simple, cost-effective and can be optimally integrated into existing processes.
Conclusion and outlook
After all the award winners and Gold Award winners had received their trophies and certificates, the industry representatives found time at a flying buffet to exchange ideas, deepen old contacts and make new ones. “We look to the future soberly but still with optimism. As long as the innovative power and creativity of our companies can develop and are not destroyed by regulatory micromanagement, we can rely on the industry's outstanding minds and talents for the benefit of people, the economy, the climate and the environment," concluded Kim Cheng. Last but not least, the German Packaging Prize 2024 should prove this again. According to dvi, the submission phase will start in February next year.
