New minimum wage in the meat industry

That was hard work and was fought for with many strikes and actions: A new minimum wage applies in German slaughterhouses and sausage factories. All employees in the industry must therefore in future at least 10,80 euros per houre for their work. After its introduction, this lower wage limit rose quickly to 11,00 euros per hour (from January 1, 2022) and later to 12,30 euros. The new minimum wage for the meat industry is already well above the statutory minimum wage of currently 9,50 euros per hour.

Tens of thousands benefit
"This benefits tens of thousands of people. They get noticeably more money for their back-to-back job," says Freddy Adjan, deputy chairman of the Food-Gourmet-Gaststätten (NGG) union. With the new collective bargaining agreement, the members of the NGG collective bargaining committee agreed unanimously was accepted, a basis will be laid on which to build: "This is a clear improvement and an important step. But we still talk about low wages for very hard work - so there is still a lot to be done. ”In a further collective agreement, further uniform minimum regulations for the industry - for example for vacation, bonuses and working hours - are to be laid down.

The new minimum wage comes into force as soon as the Federal Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs has declared the new minimum wage collective agreement to be "generally binding". The minimum wage increases in the following stages:

from "general obligation": 10,80 euros per hour
from January 1, 2022: 11,00 euros per hour
from December 1, 2022: 11,50 euros per hour
from December 1, 2023: 12,30 euros per hour
The trade union NGG and the employers of the meat industry were only able to agree on the conclusion of the new "minimum wage agreement" in the fourth collective bargaining on May 27, 2021 in Hamburg. With numerous strikes and actions, the members of the NGG had increased the pressure on employers in the past few weeks.
