Today is World Egg Day!

Berlin, October 12th, 2018. Fried eggs, scrambled eggs, breakfast eggs, poached, boiled, whipped, fried, baked, pricked, foamed - or sometimes raw: There is probably no other food that is as versatile and completely "complete" as that Egg. So it absolutely deserves that this small, compact and yet so rich food on today's "World Egg Day" is the focus of attention. World Egg Day has been celebrated worldwide on the second Friday in October since 1996 - this year tomorrow, Friday, October 12th. The Bundesverband Deutsches Ei e. V. (BDE), the leading organization of German laying hen keepers and egg producers, is celebrating: "For us, the focus is on the egg every day - but not just the egg, but above all the laying hens," says BDE Chairman Henner Schönecke. The BDE is therefore taking World Egg Day as an opportunity to point out the particularly high German production standards and to encourage consumers to consciously pay attention to the German origin when buying eggs. "This is how the consumer buys animal welfare," says Henner Schönecke. "With our voluntary renunciation of beak shortening and our leading position in alternative forms of husbandry, we German laying hen farmers are far ahead internationally."

Animal welfare and consumer will are extremely important to laying hen keepers
Animal welfare and consumer will are extremely important to the industry. That is why the German laying hen keepers have voluntarily taken the step of foregoing beak shortening across the board since the beginning of 2017. This step means a tremendous effort and a great challenge - because associated with it are significantly higher demands on the livestock owner management in the rearing of pullets and the keeping of laying hens in order to avoid feather pecking and cannibalism. Here the BDE offers its members very specific practical assistance: With experts from science and practice, the BDE has developed an online training program that provides an entertaining and innovative way of conveying all the basic knowledge necessary to avoid feather pecking and cannibalism among hens. “The e-learning tool is a great thing! This means that everyone who has to do with pullets or laying hens is optimally trained, ”says BDE Chairman Schönecke.

The six individual modules of the advanced training include legal principles as well as the early detection of behavioral disorders or effective emergency measures. All learning content is always supported by clear pictures with practical examples from flocks of pullets and laying hens. After successfully completing the final test, users will receive a certificate of attendance as proof of the knowledge they have acquired. The e-learning module is not only available in German, but also in Polish, Romanian and Bulgarian.

The e-learning tool is available directly on the homepage of the Landakademie's website: www.landakademie.de. Access costs 79 euros, for BDE members the special service of the association is the special price of 29 euros.
