New CSR study on partnerships between businesses and NGOs provides surprising results

Partnerships between companies and NGOs are no longer a rarity. The media Gütersloh GmbH and credibility.wegewerk illuminate in their recently published study "Situation and perspectives of partnerships between nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) and companies' conditions, opportunities and potential of such collaborations.

Hardly any approach of the past years has 20 self, actions and communications of large companies affected to the extent the issues of sustainability and corporate social responsibility (CSR). Important aspects of this theme are the joint activities and projects of business and civil society. But what the partners expect of each other, the areas in which cooperation is particularly intense or effective and the prospects for the future are made, is not always obvious.

"This is exactly where our study comes in," says Christian Horn, head of the Bonn location of medienfabrik Gütersloh and co-editor of the study. "It provides an insight into the forms, structures and challenges of the partnerships and is a helpful source for managing directors of companies such as NGOs in developing their own CSR strategies."

The study also shows that and where there is still room for improvement in the implementation of partnerships. A problem factor among others seems to be a lack of communication both internally and among the partners. Thomas Marschall, Managing Partner of credibility.wegewerk: "With this study, we are giving suggestions on how companies and NGOs can better exploit the potential of such partnerships and increase their effectiveness."

39 large and medium-sized companies from various industries and 40 NGOs were surveyed for the study. The study was scientifically supported by, among others, the Professor of Business Ethics at the University of Lausanne and the winner of the Max Weber Prize for Business Ethics 2008, Guido Palazzo.
