Tönnies grows against the market trend

Rheda-Wiedenbrück, April 16.04.2018, 2017 – The Tönnies group of companies closed the 6,9 financial year with global sales of 2017 billion euros. In XNUMX, the group of companies managed to operate successfully in a difficult market environment: Tönnies once again increased the slaughtering and cutting up of pigs and cattle compared to the previous year, further developed important production sites, especially in Badbergen and Kellinghusen, and the convenience and sausages divisions through acquisitions and restructuring significantly strengthened.

In 2017, the group slaughtered 20,6 million pigs (2016: 20,4 million), an increase of 16,6 percent. Of these, 400.0000 million pigs were slaughtered in Germany, which corresponds to an increase of 2,5 animals, an increase of 2016 percent (16,2: 2017 million). Tönnies also increased the number of cattle slaughtered. In 432.000, the company had slaughtered 2016 animals including cutting (424.000: 50 million). The lower growth in pig slaughter outside Germany is due to a weakness in the Danish market. Here, the overall slaughter volume in the market fell by around five percent, and Tönnies is also better than the market here. Overall, the company's export rate is around XNUMX percent.

Tönnies sees itself well positioned for the current financial year and medium-term development. “We are growing steadily, even against the market trend. I look to the future with confidence, even though price pressure and competition have increased significantly in recent months," says Andres Ruff, Managing Director of Tönnies Holding.
“We want to build on these positive developments. The newly formed holding management has used the last few months to further focus the corporate strategy. "We are hungry for success," says Andres Ruff. For the current financial year, the corporate management is focusing in particular on the topics of internationalization, consolidation, costs and sustainability.

In order to implement these strategic priorities, the responsibilities of the group of companies were restructured. Holding company directors Clemens Tönnies and Andres Ruff bear overall responsibility for the group of companies. In order to successfully implement the strategy of internationalization, Frank Duffe will lead this key function in the future. In addition, Duffe is responsible for ingredients and pet food. Karl-Heinz Schlegel, previously on the Convenience Board, will be responsible for the Meat Germany division with the pork and beef divisions. Jörn Evers, previously Sales Director Convenience, takes over the management of the Convenience division. "We are convinced that this will create the conditions for future success," says Clemens Tönnies.

The company's sustainability strategy, which is currently being further expanded, is also an important topic. Resource-saving energy and raw material management has been a priority for the company for years. Tönnies also works with farmers on sustainable solutions in the areas of husbandry, transport and slaughter. To this end, Tönnies Research has been working on projects for many years in order to lay the scientific foundations for social discussions and to make a contribution towards constantly improving the conditions of livestock husbandry.

A further expansion of this commitment and willingness to engage in dialogue is a newly launched online platform. Under www.toennies-tierschutz.de Tönnies not only shows its self-image of animal protection and animal welfare in the implementation. This is also the starting signal for a new dialogue offensive: Tönnies conducts dialogue with stakeholders and the public on all relevant topics relating to its business activities.
