“Over the past year, Extrawurst was clearly able to defy the negative trend in the catering industry that was complained about in many places,” says Kim Hagebaum, managing director of the EXTRAWURST franchise system, which is present at 26 locations nationwide. With a growth rate of almost 20 percent, the family business based in Schalksmühle (Sauerland), which has been expanding in franchising since 2007, is reporting a record figure that has not yet been reached. Group sales rose from EUR 5,96 million in 2022 to EUR 7,13 million in 2023. Despite inflation and consumers' reluctance to buy, the member of the German Franchise Association (DFV) was able to increase the number of its guests and adjust its pricing to the increasing cost pressure adjust. The average receipt was 2023 euros in 9,54; in the previous year it was 9,24 euros.

Signs point to expansion
In view of the positive development, Kim Hagebaum is optimistic about the current year, which still has a few surprises in store for the traditional company. Further openings are planned with a view to the first quarter of 2024. The franchise agreements for the new locations in Papenburg, Bocholt and Bad Hersfeld have been signed. The investment per snack stand is around 110.000 euros. There is also movement in the established Extrawurst locations. A new operator is being sought for Gießen-West. In Wetzlar, the local franchisee Thomas Böhme would like to sell the Extrawurst kiosk that he opened in June 2012 in the OBI tree chain's parking lot. A suitable successor is currently being sought.

Professional training for partners
Before the start, the hand-picked franchisees can expect an intensive training program on site at an existing franchise kiosk and via EXTRAWURST's online academy. To justify the future viability of the street food champion, Kim Hagebaum says: “In turbulent times, new entrepreneurs intuitively play it safe and prefer tried-and-tested franchise systems that satisfy the basic needs of consumers.” Exactly the profile of EXTRAWURST. Partners are being sought nationwide. The EXTRAWURST founder's son's desired locations now also include regional capitals such as Hanover and of course Berlin, which, according to legend, was the birthplace of the snack classic sung about by Herbert Grönemeyer: Ne ́Currywurst.

Profile EXTRA SAUSAGE
EXTRAWURST is present at around 30 locations nationwide, with a focus on the federal states of North Rhine-Westphalia and Hesse. The expansion initially took place concentrically around the franchise headquarters in Schalksmühle (Sauerland). In the medium term, the aim is to have 100 partner locations in Germany. The second-generation family business has more than 40 years of experience in the industry and sells over 1 million sausages per year - preferably its premium product “Langer Lüdenscheider” and most recently the vegan alternative “Ackerknacker”. The business model is protected by patents and trademarks; and membership in the German Franchise Association (DFV) guarantees the seriousness of the franchisor. Master franchisees in Great Britain, Korea and Mexico are already successfully implementing the market-tested business model internationally.
