Less and less antibiotics

In 2017, the use of therapeutic antibiotics in Belgian livestock farming was again drastically reduced. This emerges from a joint press release by the knowledge center “Surveillance of Antibiotic Consumption” (AMCRA), the Belgian Agency for the Safety of the Food Chain (FASFC) and the Belgian Agency for Drugs and Medical Devices (FAGG).

In 2014, a ten-point plan was passed in Belgium, which aims to halve the use of antibiotics in livestock farming by 2020 and to reduce important antibiotics classified as critical by 75 percent. At the same time, the administration of the active ingredient in feed mixes should be reduced by 2017 percent by the end of 50.

In the past year, two of the targeted goals were already achieved: The critical antibiotics were reduced by 2011 percent compared to 84 and the feed with added antibiotics by 66,6 percent.

The use of antibiotics in livestock farming has been reduced by 2011 percent since 25,9. Even if 2017, with a minus of 7,4 percent compared to the previous year, was the best result since the collection of antibiotic data, awareness-raising - including on the basis of benchmark reports to animal owners - must be consistently promoted. Ultimately, antimicrobial veterinary drugs are to be reduced by a further 2020 percent by 24.
