DLG Meat Committee: Prof. Dr. Matthias Upmann (Lemgo) new chairman

Prof. Dr. Matthias Upmann has been elected the new chairman of the meat committee of the DLG (German Agricultural Society). The professor for meat technology in the Life Science Technologies department of the Ostwestfalen-Lippe University of Applied Sciences (Lemgo) is succeeding Dr. Klaus-Josef Högg (ADLER, Bonndorf), who has resigned from his position after more than ten years for reasons of age. The change took place on the occasion of the digital committee meeting of the twelve-member DLG committee.
 
A worthy successor for a competent and committed pioneer like Dr. Finding Klaus-Josef Högg is not easy, says Simone Schiller, Managing Director of the DLG Food Specialist Centre. She thanked the outgoing chairman with the words: "We appreciate your voluntary work for the DLG and thank you very much for it. Because it is no longer a matter of course today to put one's know-how at the service of the general public and the industry. Upmann, however, DLG managed to find a recognized and experienced successor. He has been a member of the DLG Meat Committee since it was founded in 2010.
 
Prof. Dr. Matthias Upmann began studying veterinary medicine at the Reich University Center in Antwerp in 1984, which he completed with a license to practice medicine at the Freie Universität Berlin. In 1996 he received his doctorate. Prof. Dr. Upmann is a Food Specialist and Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Public Health. Among other things, he gained experience as a laboratory manager for microbiology and quality assurance manager at Simec AG in Switzerland, as a veterinarian in the office for veterinary affairs and food monitoring in the district of Saarlouis, as head of department for food microbiology in the chemical and veterinary examination office in Ostwestfalen-Lippe and as a research assistant at the food institutes of the veterinary medicine Educational institutions in Zurich, Vienna and Hanover. Since 2008 he has been a professor of meat technology in the Life Science Technologies department at the Ostwestfalen-Lippe University of Applied Sciences in Lemgo.
 
DLG meat committee
The DLG Meat Committee was founded in 2010 to intensify the DLG's specialist work. It deals primarily with the key issues of meat quality and meat processing. The upstream and downstream areas are also considered thematically, as is sustainability or the discourse with society. The aim is to remain in constant contact with current research in these specialist areas.
