Thomas Vogelsang will be sole managing director of the Federal Association of the German Meat Industry

In addition to his professional activities, Dr. Wiegner performs a number of voluntary tasks. Among other things, he was authorized inspector for the field of self-service fresh meat at the German Agricultural Society (DLG) and chairman of the association for the promotion of meat research at the Federal Institute for Meat Research (today the Max Rubner Institute) in Kulmbach. He represented the association at the butcher trade association (FBG), today the trade association for food and hospitality (BGN), at the European association CLITRAVI and at the research group of the food industry (FEI).

One of his particular concerns was the “further training seminar for technical executives”, which is well-known and highly valued within the industry and is held twice a year at the BGN training center in Reinhardsbrunn. He was responsible for organizing and conducting it. In the past 15 years, around 450 technical managers from member companies have been brought up to date with the latest technological and scientific knowledge.

After an apprenticeship as a butcher in his parents' butcher's shop in Nuremberg, he studied food technology and veterinary medicine at the Freie Universität Berlin. The specialist veterinarian for food hygiene and qualified food technologist did his doctorate with Prof. Dr. Sinell and with Prof. Dr. Hildebrandt. He has been associated with the DLG in various functions since 1974. In 1997 he received the DLG employee medal for his volunteer work and in 2009 he was awarded the silver Max Eyth commemorative coin by the DLG board.

According to the decision of the board of directors, the other managing director of the BVDF, Mr. Thomas Vogelsang, took over the business areas from Dr. Wiegner and will in future be solely responsible for managing the association. With a turnover of over €18 billion and around 60.000 employees, the German meat products industry is the largest area of ​​the food industry.
