Environmentally friendly packaging at FachPack 2019

Today, September 24, 2019, FachPack, the European trade fair for packaging, processes and technology, opens its doors for three days in the Exhibition Center Nuremberg. 1.590 exhibitors (39 percent international) then expect around 45.000 trade visitors at their stands to present their products and innovations. For 40 years, FachPack has been the place where packaging specialists from near and far find out about the latest trends. In its anniversary year, FachPack proclaimed a key theme for the first time: "Environmentally friendly packaging". The topic is currently occupying the packaging industry like no other and runs through FachPack like a red thread.

The discussion about environmentally friendly packaging is not new. Also in the 80s and 90s there were demonstrations against the flood of waste and for more environmental protection. The result was packaging regulations, can deposits and dual systems. With "ocean littering" and the public debate about plastic, however, it has reached a new high point. And the new packaging law, which has been in force in Germany since the beginning of the year, is an additional driver. "For the first time, we have declared a key theme at FachPack because we want to show that the packaging industry is up to this challenge and that our exhibitors have numerous innovative solutions and new approaches for environmentally friendly packaging at hand," explains Cornelia Fehlner, Head of FachPack, NürnbergMesse. 727 of the 1.590 exhibitors have the topic on their agenda and present packaging materials, machines or processes that enable environmentally friendly packaging. These companies are specially marked in the exhibition guide and at the exhibition stands. "In order to make the main topic 'environmentally friendly packaging' more tangible, we have divided it into four areas," Fehlner continues. "Specifically, it's about recycled packaging, resource-saving materials, reusable packaging and systems as well as new environmentally friendly processes."

Inspiring lectures and hands-on workshops
Interested parties can not only obtain information at the exhibition stands. 51 of the 120 specialist presentations at FachPack also deal with the main topic. For example, it revolves around design for recycling, circular economy or bio-based plastics. Speakers come from companies such as the no-waste shopping platform Loop, PepsiCo or Procter & Gamble. While the PackBox Forum in Hall 7 mainly focuses on the topics of packaging, packaging printing and finishing, the TechBox Forum in Hall 4 focuses more on packaging technology and logistics.

The Open Workshop Area in Hall 8 is new this year. Workshops are held there every day, in which the participants develop ideas and concepts for environmentally friendly packaging live in just 2,5 hours. The complete program of the PackBox and TechBox as well as information about

40 years of FachPack: A success story
As a regional trade exhibition for packaging, FachPack started in 1979 with 88 exhibitors and around 2.000 visitors at the then new exhibition center in Nuremberg. Since then, FachPack has developed successfully, has become bigger and more international, and is now the European trade fair for the packaging industry. In 1995 more than 400 exhibitors took part for the first time, in 2003 the 1.000 exhibitor mark was broken, in 2015 the organizers recorded over 40.000 trade visitors for the first time. And in 2018, 38 percent of the 1.644 FachPack exhibitors and 29 percent of the 44.019 trade visitors came from predominantly European countries. FachPack manager Fehlner is particularly proud of eleven exhibitors. These eleven have been present at every trade fair since the first event in 1979 to this day. "We would like to say a special thank you for this extraordinary commitment and loyalty to FachPack and the Nuremberg trade fair location," says Fehlner.

Packaging manufacturers draw a positive balance
The packaging market continued to grow in 2017. According to the Joint Committee of German Packaging Manufacturers (GADV), around 19 million tons of packaging were produced. The production volume thus increased by 1,1 percent compared to the previous year. Sales increased by 4,6 percent to around 33 billion euros. As in previous years, plastic packaging generated the largest share of sales with a share of around 44 percent. In terms of volume, packaging made of paper, cardboard and cardboard was the largest packaging material group at around 47 percent.

Food and packaging machinery grows moderately
After the record year 2018, the VDMA Association for Food Processing and Packaging Machinery expects moderate growth this year and expects a production increase of 2 percent. With an average of 80 percent coming from abroad, the industry is still number one on the world market.

At the beginning of 2018, many of the approximately 600 manufacturing companies still had a good order backlog. In 2018, the production value for food processing and packaging machines rose to almost 15,2 (previous year 14,0) billion euros, an increase of a good 8 percent and a new record value. Packaging machines accounted for a production value of around 7,1 (previous year 6,6) billion euros. The export of food and packaging machines rose by a good 2018 percent in 6 to more than 9,0 (previous year 8,5) billion euros. The most important sales markets are still the European Union and the USA. Significant increases or impetus also came from China, Russia, Brazil, Japan, South Korea and India in 2018.
