German organic farming grows
Organic farming in Germany has taken a steady upward trend in recent years. End 2007 18.703 farmed holdings 865.300 hectares which were 4,8 percent more floor space a year earlier.
Total 5,1 percent of the total agricultural land in Germany were used according to the criteria of the EU organic regulation. The highest proportions were in Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Saarland and Hessen.
Bayern, however, has made the largest organic area with 152.600 hectares; However, the eco-share is below average with 4,7 percent. In Saxony and Lower Saxony, however, the eco-shares are below 3 percent.
