Clean, quiet and efficient thanks to electrified cooling units

Noise and pollutant emissions in distribution traffic and the threat of driving bans for diesel vehicles in city centers are currently a topic in all media and are bringing alternative forms of drive into the conversation. The vehicle manufacturers already offer various solutions for their engines. So far, little attention has been paid to the fact that a large part of the goods are distributed with refrigerated vehicles and that the refrigeration is carried out in most cases Cooling units with diesel engines he follows.

The refrigerated vehicle manufacturer Kiesling and its partner AddVolt, a young technology company, now offer a solution to this problem that makes it possible to convert all transport refrigeration units from diesel to electric operation. Due to the electrical operation of the cooling units, inner cities can be served with significantly reduced CO2 and noise emissions.

Available for rent
The lessor CharterWay is also on board and is now offering the first vehicle in its fleet. Users and customers can rent the solution from CharterWay and use it in their fleet for a maximum of 2 months to test the functionality and practicality of the entire system.

Efficiency
The AddVolt system is based on a powerful power pack that can be used to operate any cooling machine. This power pack is fully charged within an hour using a high-voltage charging cable while the vehicle is not in use. The fully charged rechargeable battery, a lithium iron phosphate battery, then operates the cooling device in electric mode for approx. 2-3 hours.

While driving, a 40 KW generator converts braking energy into electrical energy via recuperation and feeds this continuously into the power pack. Depending on the route and use, the cooling can be operated largely in electric mode, making the diesel engine superfluous.

Retrofitting possible
The AddVolt system consists of a power pack and controller unit mounted separately on the vehicle, which can be connected to any cooling machine. It is therefore also suitable for retrofitting in existing vehicle fleets.

Because it is a pure plug-in solution that does not interfere with the cooling machine system. Guarantees from the refrigeration machine manufacturers therefore remain unaffected and service can be carried out as usual. tkv Süd in Ulm is available as a service partner for the Powerpack.

The advantages of the AddVolt system summarized:
- Driving and stationary operation in electric mode
- Clean and quiet in the city center, electric operation reduces noise by 6,5 dB

Compared to the diesel engine
- No diesel engine during early morning deliveries in residential areas
- Breaks for the driver are much quieter
- Recuperation saves energy, resulting in extremely economical operation
- Independent of vehicle engine and cooling machine

Is the system worth it?
The benefits for the environment and especially for inner cities are obvious. When comparing the costs and benefits of the system, the purchase of the high-performance power pack is initially a great deal of effort, but the operating costs for cooling devices are reduced significantly by using the AddVolt system.

The annual diesel consumption of a refrigeration machine with 1500 operating hours and a consumption of 3 l / hour is quickly over 6000 €, the costs for electricity are low and the recuperation energy is fed in free of charge.

Further savings result from the lower maintenance requirements for the cooling units, and the diesel engine may even be completely eliminated.

Overall, the AddVolt system can be expected to pay for itself in 3-5 years at the latest.

Clear data analysis from monitoring
A telematics system that tracks the location and routes via GPS and, at the same time, evaluates temperature data and operating data provides exact figures from daily use. At the same time, the user receives information on how to optimize the application.

This monitoring makes the green and clean transport share visible and provides convincing arguments for equipping with AddVolt.
