Meat industry supports legislative projects

The Association of the Meat Industry e. V. (VDF) supports the federal government's proposed legislation to abolish the system of work contracts. The key points of a cabinet decision of May 20, 2020 are supported by the VDF. The first implementations by member companies show the seriousness with which the meat industry in Germany as a whole is striving to reverse the previous practice and want to end the system of work contracts in slaughtering and cutting.

"With our five-point plan, we submitted a proposal to the federal government on May 16 to regulate the regulations and standards for housing and occupational safety measures for employees who do not have their permanent residence in Germany in a nationwide manner that is binding for all companies in our industry and to control it," says VDF General Manager Dr. Heike Harstick. “We are renewing our willingness to engage in dialogue with the federal government in order to achieve appropriate and effective legislation. We want to implement these regulations and the ban on work contracts in the core areas of the meat industry.”

The meat industry wants to fully assume employer responsibility for the employees it employs. dr Heike Harstick: "Our goal is a corresponding legal regulation that is uniformly binding for all companies in the industry and is effectively controlled by state or neutral bodies. We want to play a constructive role in ensuring that the necessary regulations are enacted and implemented quickly and precisely.”

The VDF and the companies take the criticism leveled over the past few weeks during the course of the Corona Pandemic seriously and want to continue producing high-quality and safe food in Germany for consumers in the future and continue to be a reliable partner to agriculture.
