Young families eat healthy - but you can't do without snacking

Young families eat healthily, but do not forego sweets. This is the result of a survey by ELTERN magazine and the Federal Ministry of Food, in which over 3.000 young parents took part.

In most young families (85,5 percent), the mothers cook; in only 11 percent of households, the partners share the cooking. Most of them attach great importance to fresh and home-cooked meals and only cook with ready-made products in exceptional cases. With only 0,2 percent of the survey participants, pizza, fries and the like are pushed into the oven every day and with 29,5 percent a meal from the package is put on the table once a week.

Despite the healthy diet, those with a sweet tooth will also get their money's worth. Only 1,5 percent of children have to avoid sweets altogether, while 53,8 percent of little ones seem to be able to convince their parents that gummy bears, black kisses and chocolate are among the staple foods that children "need" every day.

The dining table must not become a stress table. Fixed rules make it easier to deal with each other and create a pleasant atmosphere when eating. 89,4 percent of those surveyed state that there is no chaos at the dining table. The younger children must remain seated during the meal and are not allowed to play with the food. The grown-ups have to lend a hand, such as setting and clearing the table. Typically German: Most family members have their regular place (86,7 percent). In 28,8 percent of the families surveyed, grace or a rhyme is said before the meal.

Getting all family members to sit at a table is not that easy: the parents have appointments or have to go to work, the children to kindergarten. That doesn't leave much time for meals together. Nevertheless, 78,1 percent of the young families surveyed manage to sit down at the dining table together at least once a day, usually for dinner. Overall, young families spend an average of 54 minutes a day eating together.
