Tulip buys factory in Germany

Effective March 1, 2004, Tulip Food Company will take over the activities of Oldenburger Fleischwarenfabrik in Germany. The takeover is part of the strategy to strengthen Tulip's competitive strengths in the German market.

The Oldenburger Fleischwarenfabrik in Oldenburg, Lower Saxony, has a logistically favorable location near Tulip's factory in Schüttorf. The takeover, effective March 1, 2004, is still subject to the approval of the Federal Cartel Office.

Germany has been a large and important market for Tulip for many years, and the acquisition of the factory enables, among other things, an expansion of Tulip's range of traditional German meat products and strengthens the competitive forces and sales opportunities on the German market.

The factory was built in 1986, has a floor area of 34.000 square meters and is in excellent condition both building and facility. Weekly production has been modest compared to the opportunities available. The factory employs about 300 people.

The factory is equipped with cutting and meat processing facilities. Some of the production facilities have been leased to Danish Crown for the past 18 months, which employs around 150 people in its Oldenburg department. This tenancy will continue, and at the same time Tulip will use the meat processing facilities itself.

In 2002/03 Tulip had a turnover of 101 million euros in Germany. Some of the products for the German market are made in Tulip's factory in Schüttorf, which produces traditional, dried premium ham and cold cuts, among other things. The other products are made in Tulip's Danish factories.
