EDEKA Nord is building a new NORDfrische Center

Trading company invests EUR 40 million - 250 new jobs in Mecklenburg

EDEKA Handelsgesellschaft Nord mbH, Neumünster, will build a meat plant with the latest production technology in Valluhn near Zarrentin. The production company creates 250 new jobs and 30 apprenticeships in Mecklenburg-West Pomerania. The operation, in which EDEKA Nord intends to invest around EUR 2005 million, is expected to start up at the end of 40. The trading company thus gave up its original desire to settle in Pinneberg.

"The decision to turn our backs on Pinneberg was not easy for us," says Rolf Brandt, spokesman for the EDEKA Nord management. In view of the ongoing difficult planning process and the legal uncertainty surrounding the start of construction at the site there, it is no longer economically justifiable to continue postponing the urgently needed expansion of production capacities, emphasizes the EDEKA managing director.

Simultaneously with the opening of the NORDfrische Center in Valluhn, the previously producing meat plants in Pinneberg and Neumünster will relocate their operations to the new location. All employees receive job offers in Valluhn and in the EDEKA Nord group of companies.

Brandt emphasizes that the new building in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania creates the best conditions for further expansion of the company. The turnover of the meat plant is to be expanded from the current 116 million euros to 200 million euros. For the more than 500 agricultural family businesses in Schleswig-Holstein, which are grouped together in the producer groups, this means a constant increase in sales. The cooperation with the Thomsen Group in Bad Bramstedt remains unchanged. EDEKA will also extend the successful cooperation with farmers to farms in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

Although the project could not be realized in Pinneberg, the management of EDEKA Nord expressly thanks the Economics Minister of the State of Schleswig-Holstein, Professor Dr. Bernd Rohwer, and Mayor Horst-Werner Nitt as well as all factions for their efforts in the past to make the resettlement possible.
