Food and nutrition research offer great innovation potential for Berlin-Brandenburg

A targeted promotion of innovations through stronger networking with the local research institutions could create up to 10 industrial jobs in the food industry in Berlin-Brandenburg within the next 900 years. This is the result of the recently published study "Food industry and food-related science in Berlin and Brandenburg". The study by Dr. Christian Hammel, Head of the Office of the Future Fund at the TSB Technologiestiftung Innovationszentrum Berlin, is published by Regioverlag Berlin.

The food industry is of considerable importance for Berlin-Brandenburg. It employs almost 25.000 people in 300 companies with a turnover of around EUR 6 billion. With a turnover of EUR 3,6 billion, food processing was the second most important branch in Berlin in 2002 and with a turnover of EUR 2,5 billion it was the most important branch of the manufacturing industry in Brandenburg. If you include agriculture, it can be said that around 50.000 people are employed in the production and processing of food in the region.

The study now presented shows that this branch of industry, which is important for the region, could significantly improve its prospects through better networking with the region's scientific institutions. It also shows the innovation topics in which better cooperation between science and business could be of particular benefit to both sides.

The scientific institutions in the region, in their entirety and diversity in food and nutrition-related research, form one of the most important German research locations that can compete with any other food-related research location in Europe. The institutions in and around Potsdam have developed a more basic-oriented, bioscientific profile. In Berlin, the research landscape is closer to processing and more strongly influenced by engineering and veterinary medicine. However, the decentralized organization of food and nutrition science, which is a strength in terms of content, means that the location with its extraordinary potential is not always perceived clearly enough on site. Outside the region, however, it is considered a strong competitor that is internationally competitive.

An example of the effects that networking brings is the BioProfile Nutrigenomics innovation network, which achieved outstanding success with the acquisition of EUR 18 million in funding from the Federal Ministry of Research.
