Less lamb in New Zealand

Production in Australia increases

For the current 2003/04 marketing year, New Zealand expects lamb production to fall by four to five percent to around 434.300 tons. The reasons given are low fertility performance, fewer lambs born and fewer pregnant ewes. On the other hand, the slaughter weights increased by two percent to an average of 17 kilograms due to better forage and pasture conditions.

The production of lamb in Australia developed somewhat differently: here production increased by seven percent to a new record level of 120.000 tons. The average lamb weight increased by six percent to 21 kilograms.
