Less and less slaughter calves

Stable to firm producer prices in 2005

The range of calves for slaughter in Germany is tending to decrease. In the first half of the current year, the continued reduction in the number of cattle led to an increase in calf slaughter. But as early as next year, the market is likely to be in short supply with calves and veal. Stable to fixed prices are therefore possible.

For the first time since the BSE years of 2000 and 2001, when prices for slaughter calves had fallen to historic lows, producer prices for slaughter calves in Germany exceeded the limit of five euros per kilogram of slaughter weight in December 2002. Apparently, consumers have regained confidence in veal. From March to August 2004, the prices for slaughtered calves were well above the comparative values of previous years. The fatteners therefore hoped for new record earnings at the end of the year. In September, however, the year-on-year level was undershot again for the first time. Although those involved in the market are expecting more fastenings in the coming weeks up to the end of the year, it is questionable whether the limit of five euros per kilogram of slaughter weight will be reached.

National action program for diabetes mellitus

Treat diabetes better and prevent increase

In view of the increasing number of people with diabetes, representatives of the German Diabetes Society (DDG) and the German Diabetes Union (DDU) presented a nationwide action program on October 21 in Munich. The nationwide multi-year "National Diabetes Program Germany" launched on the initiative of the DDU and the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Security (BMGS) pursues two main goals: to improve the public's perception of diabetes as a widespread disease and to motivate prevention; in the professional world to coordinate and promote diabetes prevention, care and research.

The need for action for a national diabetes action program is great: there are currently more than six million people living with diabetes in Germany and an unknown number of sufferers who have not yet been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. In the last 40 years, the number of patients with type 2 diabetes has increased tenfold and the trend is still rising: "The WHO estimates an increase of 45 percent by 2030," says Professor Dr. medical Wolfgang Kerner from the Heart and Diabetes Center Mecklenburg-West Pomerania in Karlsburg. "That's a conservative estimate, according to many experts it could be significantly more." But even this cautiously estimated increase would mean that more than every 10th German citizen would have to live with type 2 diabetes and the high risk of secondary diseases such as heart attack, stroke, blindness or dialysis.

In the first half of October, the German retail trade charged an average of 3,31 euros for a kilogram of frozen goose across all types of store, around 30 cents less than in the same period last year.

In 2003, association agreements had already anticipated EU accession and some goose exports from Poland and Hungary had already been made duty-free. What Europeans think of EU agricultural policy

A special Eurobarometer survey entitled "European Union citizens and farming, 1995-2003" gives a general picture of how citizens' perceptions of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), its objectives and benefits have evolved and how they assess the changes that have occurred. Overall, according to the survey, Europeans have a positive perception of the CAP's role in meeting their demands. At the same time, however, it is clear that more needs to be done to explain to the general public how the CAP works.

According to Eurobarometer, agriculture is the EU policy area most perceived by citizens. They see a common agricultural policy – as well as environmental and social policies – as a necessity. Furthermore, as part of the process of European integration, the majority believes that decisions in this area should be taken at European Union level. The report presents the main findings of a representative sample of questions asked in the Standard Eurobarometer on the CAP and food quality over the period 1995-2003.

Higher expenses for pot roast and tenderloin

Beef selection not too extensive

High-quality cuts of beef have become somewhat more expensive for German consumers over the course of the year, and the price level achieved at retail level is unlikely to change much in the coming weeks. Because with good demand at home and abroad and the additional impulses from the Christmas business, the supply of young bulls and calves is not expected to be all that extensive.

In particular, high-quality cuts of beef now cost more than last year, while the price increase for minced meat and boiled meat is not as pronounced. At the shop level, according to ZMP surveys, braised beef cost an average of 8,71 euros per kilogram for all shop types in September, 15 cents more than in the same month last year. Fillet of beef cost 24,86 euros per kilogram, 27 cents more than in September 2003. Fewer live pigs introduced

Exports of pork increased

In the first half of 2004, there were clear differences in German foreign trade in pigs and pork. In particular, the supply of live pigs to Germany decreased, by 13 percent to 2,08 million pieces. This primarily affected the imports of piglets, which fell by 19 percent to just under 1,18 million pieces. Both in the Netherlands and in Denmark, Germany's main suppliers, the available supply of piglets was small, so that their exports fell significantly. The Dutch also delivered fewer fattening pigs than in the previous year. On the other hand, more pigs came from Denmark, because due to the slaughterhouse strike there in the spring, many pigs ready for slaughter had to be exported.

German exports of live pigs hardly changed compared to the previous year; in the first half of the year they were again around 387.500 animals. The most important buyers were Austria with almost 162.200 pigs and the Netherlands with 63.600 pigs.
