Prof. Dr. Katharina Riehn new chair of the DLG Food Center

(DLG). The entire committee of the DLG (German Agricultural Society) has Prof. Dr. Katharina Riehn (HAW Hamburg) elected as the new chairwoman of the DLG Food Specialist Center at the winter conference in Hanover. This means she is also a member of the DLG board and vice-president. Prof. Dr. Riehn succeeds Prof. Dr. Michael Doßmann (Muhr am See). The veterinarian for food safety and Meat hygiene has been contributing her expertise to the specialist and quality work of the DLG since 2004. 

Prof. Dr. med. vet. Katharina Riehn holds the chair for food microbiology and toxicology at the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (HAW). The specialist veterinarian has been a graduate of the European College of Veterinary Public Health (ECVPH) in the field of "Food Science" since November 2014.

After completing her studies at the Free University of Berlin in 2004, Riehn did her doctorate at the Institute for Food Hygiene there with Prof. Dr. G. Hildebrandt, the long-standing DLG authorized inspector for meat products, with a thesis on the bacterial and viral contamination status of Pacific rock oysters. In the same year, she also took part in quality tests at the DLG for the first time as a research assistant. After her work as a scientific assistant, which she has held in the institutes for food hygiene at the Free University of Berlin and the University of Leipzig since 2006, she has been Professor of Food Microbiology and Toxicology in the Department of Nutritional Sciences in the Life Sciences Faculty of the University of Applied Sciences ( HAW) in Hamburg. As part of her research, she focuses on aspects relevant to animal welfare in the area of ​​slaughter and food-associated parasitic zoonoses. Another focus of her research is the identification of quality parameters in cocoa and mangos.

The managing director of the DLG food specialist center, Simone Schiller, was very satisfied with the election of Prof. Riehn as the new chairwoman. "Due to the close connection to practice, her extensive experience as a scientist and her instinct for setting the strategic course, Prof. Riehn will help to further develop and strengthen the technical and test work of the DLG."
